Sgian Dubh

Sgian Dubh

The Sgian Dubh is a short knife, today worn in the right Kilt hose. It has a deep history in Scotland, it's name is Gaelic and Sgian is defined as blade or knife and Dubh is defined as black, darkness, or hidden.

During the period of proscription Scots where forbidden to wear kilts and weaponry.

The Sgian Dubh is ideal for personal protection and was easily concealed, most commonly this little knife was placed in the armpit, and while in the presence of fellow Scots it became the custom to wear in the top of the kilt hose.

There are two standard styles for the Sgian Dubh, a Day and a Dress, as with most “Day Wear” it is more utility and typically is a wooden or stag horn handle. While the Dress Sgian Dubh is more a formal accessory, some are adorned with silver plates and gemstone crested on the top of the blackwood handle.

Today there are many styles of Sgian Dubh's to choose from, Wood look handles to highly polished silver, and it is not uncommon to have your Clan crest on your Sgian Dubh.
