Kilt Belt

Kilt Belt

The actual date is still a bit of a mystery on kilt belts, the earliest mention is during the first part of the 17th century in reference to the belted plaid or great kilt worn.

Again history is a bit uncertain as to then the kilt and belt as we know it today came about, the traditional belt we think of is mentioned in a writing “In the life of Red Hugh O'Donnell written by, Lughaidh O'Clery, a group of hired mercenaries from Scotland's Hebrides who where employed by O'Donnell in 1594, an excerpt from his writing; “ These were recognized among the Irish by the difference of their arms and clothing, their habits and language, for their exterior dress was mottled cloaks to the calf of the leg with ties and fastenings. Their girdles were over the loins outside the cloaks”

This writing definitely mentions the belt worn around the outside.

Today we have the leather belt in width's of 2 “, 2 ¼”, and 2 ½ ” and most commonly are adjustable with a strap in the inside of the belt. Most common color is black, although Brown is gaining in popularity as well.

No belt is complete without it's buckle and a highlander buckle can range from a simple flat design to more intricate designs with enamel and gemstone finishes.
